How to split a receipt with flatmates, a partner or friends
The fairest way to split a receipt is for everyone to pay for what they actually had, while shared items such as dish soap or snacks are divided equally. With long receipts that is tedious by hand; in Bonstructer you tap the lines and the app works out who owes whom.
When should you split per item and when equally?
No single method always fits. What matters is how different everyone's shopping really is.
- Equal split (total divided by the number of people) is quick and works when everyone had roughly the same: a pizza night, a barbecue, a gift for someone else.
- Per item is fairer when there are outliers: one person does not drink alcohol, one flatmate buys all the meat, someone adds shampoo to the shared shop. Everyone pays for their own lines.
- Mixed: assign personal things per item and split everything shared equally. For most shared flats (a WG, short for Wohngemeinschaft) this is the most honest option.
How do you handle shared basics?
Toilet paper, dish soap, oil, salt, coffee: nobody wants to assign things everyone uses. Two common approaches:
- Split them equally when they are on the receipt. It is transparent and easy to follow on the receipt itself.
- A shared kitty or a fixed monthly amount if you do not want to settle every shop. It saves discussions but relies on trust that nobody consistently uses much more.
What about deposits, discounts and vouchers?
In Germany the bottle deposit (Pfand) and discounts appear as their own lines on the receipt. Before splitting, agree who they belong to: the deposit slip usually goes to whoever returns the bottles, a discount on one product to whoever takes it. A discount on the whole shop can be split equally. What matters is handling it the same way every time.
How do you split a receipt after a party or a trip?
After parties and trips one person usually pays for everything up front. A simple routine:
- Save the receipt right away so it does not get lost or fade.
- Decide what each person pays: drinks and food for everyone equally, personal items per line.
- Settle soon. The longer you wait, the more often someone asks "how much was that again?".
- Request the amount directly instead of sending a list everyone has to recalculate.
How do you split a receipt in Bonstructer?
The lines are already there after scanning, so there is nothing to type. Here is how it works:
- Scan the receipt (camera, photo, PDF, QR e-receipt or pasted text) and choose Split receipt inside the receipt.
- Tap who had which line. Lines you do not assign to anyone are shared by everybody equally. That suits shared basics and a pizza for all.
- Check the result. Bonstructer calculates who owes whom.
- Send each share. You send every share straight to the person's app (end-to-end encrypted) or as a message with PayPal, Wero or GiroCode. A GiroCode is a QR code that the other person's German banking app can scan.
Your own IBAN or PayPal address is stored end-to-end encrypted: only your device holds the key, and a token carries it over to a new phone.
How do couples and flatmates share one notebook?
You can share the notebook with a partner, family or flat: invite them by link, then everyone scans and everyone sees the same thing. That helps when several people shop, because nobody has to hand over receipts or photograph and send them. Questions in the chat, such as "What did we spend on groceries together last week?", then refer to the shared receipts. Answers are written by an AI based on your receipts and can be wrong; you check totals in the notebook.
To see how well the app reads receipts, look at scan quality on the home page. You can try it in the browser at bonstructer.com/app; the Android app is in closed testing on Google Play, and on iPhone you use the web app from your home screen.
What should you keep in mind with money between friends?
- Clarify beforehand what is shared and what is personal.
- Settle soon, ideally the same or next day.
- Round tiny amounts generously if everyone agrees.
- Keep the receipt so everyone can follow the calculation.
- For larger sums (deposit, furniture, rent) settle in writing rather than via receipts.
